General Information<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc493147658\"><\/a>Welcome to the School of Medical Sciences<\/h2>\n<p>Welcome to your Postgraduate Taught Programme in the School of Medical Sciences within the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health at the University of Manchester. The University has a worldwide reputation based on high quality teaching and research, and I am sure that your programme will provide a solid foundation for your future career success.<\/p>\n<p>Within the School and the wider Faculty, our goal is to create an environment that allows you to excel and reach your full potential. Offering access to first-class facilities and strong links with regional health-service providers, our postgraduate programmes are designed to meet the diverse needs of all our students. The curriculum of our taught programmes provides the knowledge and skills you will need in your subject area and all our Masters programmes include an opportunity to carry out an independent research project on topics spanning all areas of biomedical research from molecular to experimental biology and clinical medicine. While subject areas cover a broad range, all our taught programmes have two common aims:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To develop your skills in your chosen field of study<\/li>\n<li>To enhance your knowledge within the field you have chosen. In some of your taught programme you may be required to undertake assessed course units for Research Methods, Qualitative Research or Statistics. If your programme involves taught units then you should refer to the Blackboard material relating to that course unit. Please contact your Programme Administrator if you are unsure which material relates to your assessed work. You will still be able to refer to the online skills resource in later years.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Introductory Courses<\/h2>\n<p>All students are automatically enrolled onto an introductory unit that provides information on health and safety, academic malpractice and academic literacy. Completion instructions for each of these sections are clearly defined within the course. <strong>Completion of the academic malpractice and health and safety sections is mandatory for all students<\/strong>. All assessments must be completed as soon as possible after the programme begins, with the academic malpractice assessment completed before the first piece of coursework is submitted. Completion of these assessments is monitored by the School. All students are also strongly advised to complete the academic literacy section.\t\t<\/p>\n\n<h2><strong>Health and Safety (Lab Based Programmes)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In most laboratories, you will come across potential hazards. Prior to starting work in any laboratory you should undergo a Health and Safety induction by the safety officer of your laboratory project \u2013 it is your responsibility to ensure that this happens. You must ensure that you read any relevant literature relating to Health and Safety given to you at this induction or at any other time in the programme. Refer to the on-line Health and Safety course unit that you completed at Induction. Laboratory coats must be worn in laboratory areas and will be provided by your supervisor. Project work must be carried out according to the particular guidelines and COSHH regulations for that piece of work or project in the laboratory in which the project is undertaken. Any accidents occurring in laboratories should be immediately reported to your project supervisor.\t\t<\/p>\n\n<p>It is your responsibility to ensure that the research staff and students for whom you have responsibility are provided with an environment that is safe and healthy and all research is conducted within the requirements of health and safety legislation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>That necessary risk assessments have been undertaken (Never assume that because your research is not lab-based or using hazardous substances that it would not require a risk assessment).<\/li>\n<li>That staff are adequately informed, trained and monitored regarding safe practices to ensure they do not endanger themselves, others or the environment.<\/li>\n<li>That your research complies with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health regulations as appropriate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1><strong>2. Overview of the Programme<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"post-5025-_Toc493652539\"><\/a><a id=\"post-5025-_Toc457317736\"><\/a><a id=\"post-5025-_Toc487690613\"><\/a><a id=\"post-5025-_Toc487704534\"><\/a><strong>Aims and Learning Objectives of the MRes Programme<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It is recognised by the Research Councils, by Universities, and by employers that a gap has opened up between the skills possessed by new graduates and the skills normally expected on entry to a higher research degree or an industrial research career. The MRes has been specifically designed to bridge this gap. The programme is entitled MRes Medical Science. Learning time includes attendance (contact) time, practical work, private reading and note taking, preparation of projects, etc. In accordance with the University\u2019s credit rating for Masters (MRes) Degrees the MRes comprises 180 credits. 120 credits are dedicated to research projects and 60 credits to four taught elements: 15 credits each to Research Methods, Laboratory Skills, Tutorials and Masterclass in Reproduction and Pregnancy course units. Assessment of most course units will involve summative assessment (marks go towards final award) and formative assessment which may be either formal or informal.<\/p>\n<p>The MRes Programme is operationally divided into two parts:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Part 1<\/strong> comprises four Taught course units and Research Project 1 and First Examiners\u2019 Meeting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Part 2<\/strong> comprises Research Project 2 (including the MRes Dissertation) and Final Examiners\u2019 Meeting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Exit awards:<\/strong> Students may wish to leave the Programme due to unforeseen circumstances. Depending on the achievement of appropriate amount of credit, it might be possible to submit for the PG Certificate (exit point: 60 credits) or PG Diploma (exit point: 120 credits).<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Course Unit Outlines<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-5025-_Toc491169073\"><\/a><strong>RESEARCH METHODS (MEDN 69910)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Course Unit Administrator: <\/strong>Christie Finegan <a href=\"mailto:christie.finegan@manchester.ac.uk\">christie.finegan@manchester.ac.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Introduction to the Course Unit<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Research Methods Course is a 15 credit, interactive blended learning course which provides students with an introduction to key material required for the design, execution and interpretation of medical, scientific and clinically-related research and the production of a high quality dissertation.<\/p>\n<p>The unit will run online over one semester. There will be online material opened on each topic at specific timetabled slots throughout the semester and face-to-face consolidation sessions.<\/p>\n<p>The unit incorporates online material and 10 face-to-face sessions covering:<\/p>\n<p>Introduction to Blackboard and research methods online;<\/p>\n<p>Dissertations skills \u2013 covering literature search, principles of academic writing, critical appraisal of publications, plagiarism and abstract writing;<\/p>\n<p>Study design \u2013 covering project planning, time management and an overview of specific research designs, ethical issues\u00a0 and principles of good governance that apply to all clinical research;<\/p>\n<p>Statistics \u2013 covering a basic introduction to statistical methods;<\/p>\n<p>Communication skills &#8211; One of the major mechanisms of medical scientific output is to publish research findings in medical and scientific journals. In the Tutorial course unit, students will be given specific journal articles to read and study. In addition to learning to evaluate the scientific content of these papers, the students will be required to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the research, to define how you might further pursue a particular topic or piece if work at the level of research based science, and to assess critically the relevance of the work in other research disciplines. The second part of the unit will involve students formulating a research proposal that arises from their literature studies.<\/p>\n<p>Research project 1 may well be your first serious encounter with research in Medical Science. It provides an opportunity to delve deeply into a topic in Medical Science, the underlying science, and to imagine how present day research can contribute to improved treatment and outcomes for patients<\/p>\n<p>The starting point for the project will usually be a topic defined your supervisory team. Your supervisors will provide you with a brief outline of the topic and some starter references. At this stage you will not be given specific project aims as you are intended to develop a hypothesis and aims during the research proposal aspect of the unit. During the first 10 weeks of the unit you will focus on the literature review. You will need to read the background and history of the problem, critically examine previous research that has been reported in the literature, consider the relevant molecular, cellular and tissue-level processes, and any clinical implications. Your supervisors will help you to fill gaps in your basic knowledge, depending on your background. The methods you learn in the laboratory skills unit and techniques workshops, and your tutorial and seminar work will all help you to understand the concepts and methodology you encounter. During the weeks you are working on your literature report, you will have regular progress meetings with your supervisors. It is not a requirement that both supervisors are involved in every meeting.<\/p>\n<p>After you have completed your literature review, you will prepare a research proposal to address a hypothesis you generate based on the gaps in knowledge identified during the literature review. <strong>Your proposal should be for a 6 month project, however, it may not ultimately be the exact project you complete during Research project 2; this will be decided by the supervisors based on feasibility and costs<\/strong>. Although the majority of your research proposal will be completed in the New Year, during the preparation of your literature review you will gradually become aware of unanswered questions, gaps in knowledge, controversies and even contradictions in your area of study. These are the starting points for your research proposal. You will receive training in developing ideas, devising a workable approach, critically appraising the likely advance this project would bring if successful, and presenting a persuasive overall case that would convince an independent body that the research will be worthwhile and fruitful.<\/p>\n<p>You will start by defining a main hypothesis. This is likely to be broad, leading to several subsidiary hypotheses that might be capable of being addressed in a clinical or laboratory setting in a well-equipped academic centre. Imagining you have all the necessary resources at your disposal, how would you seek to add to knowledge in your chosen topic? Would you seek to increase understanding of a basic cellular process, and if so how? How might success translate to the clinic? Alternatively, would you choose to start from a clinical setting and do a patient based study? How would you select your patients? What investigations would you carry out? Would a laboratory arm be useful in the project? What can you realistically achieve in 6 months?<\/p>\n<p>Throughout project 1, in preparation for the task of constructing a research proposal, you should give specific attention to areas of your topic that are incompletely understood, as these are the source of emergent research questions. This is a key part of the dialogue that you have with your supervisors, and should be an <em>explicit<\/em> component of your meetings throughout RP1.<\/p>\n<p>Your choice of project 1 will have a major impact on the direction of your MRes, because the research you undertake in project 2 will likely be related to your study topic in project 1, and will have the same supervisors. It is acceptable, without penalty, for you to submit an assignment within a range that is plus 10% of this limit. If you present an assignment with a word count exceeding the specified limit+10%, the assignment will be marked but 1% will be deducted from this mark for every 100 words over the limit given.<\/p>\n<p>For an original word limit that is 1000 words and an assignment that is marked out of 100. \u00a0If a submission is made that is 1101 words then it exceeded the 10% leeway, and is more than 100 words over the original limit and should receive a 1 mark deduction.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em>In accordance with accepted academic practice, when submitting any written assignment for summative assessment, the notion of a word count includes the following without exception:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>All titles or headings that form part of the actual text. This does not include the fly page or reference list<\/li>\n<li>All words that form the actual essay<\/li>\n<li>All words forming the titles for figures, tables and boxes, are included but this does not include boxes or tables or figures themselves<\/li>\n<li>All in-text (that is bracketed) references<\/li>\n<li>All directly quoted material<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Certain assessments may require different penalties for word limits to be applied. For example, if part of the requirement for the assessment is conciseness of presentation of facts and arguments. In such cases it may be that no 10% leeway is allowed and penalties applied may be stricter than described above. In such cases the rules for word count limits and the penalties to be applied will be clearly stated in the assessment brief and in the submission details for that assessment.<\/p>\n\n<h2><strong>Fitness to Practise <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Where a programme of study requires the student to undertake practical training in a quasi-professional role in relation to patients, clients or service-users or where the qualification provides a direct license to practise, the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health has a duty to ensure that the student is fit to practise. In the case of illness, you must provide a copy of a medical certificate. If students have any queries concerning this, they should contact their Programme Administrator in the first instance.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>First Examiners\u2019 Meetings<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The MRes Medical Sciences Programme has one External Examiner, who advises the Faculty of the quality of the programme and its management, as well as providing advice on the quality of the assessment procedures and fairness of the decisions made about individual students. They will be sent the reports from Research Project 1 and will be able to view a selection of taught course work and assessments. The major purpose of the Examiners\u2019 meeting (held in May) is to ratify the marks from the four taught course units and Research Project 1 and to confirm that students can progress with Research Project 2 of the MRes Programme (see below for details).<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"post-5025-_Toc487690637\"><\/a><a id=\"post-5025-_Toc487704548\"><\/a><strong>Progression Requirements and Options Available to Students<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Progression to Research Project 2 of the MRes programme occurs once the criteria noted below have been met and approved at the First External Examiners\u2019 meeting (in practice students will have started Research Project 2 by the date of this meeting). If achievements do not meet the criteria as set out below at the end of Research Project 1 of the programme, the student will normally be invited to submit for a PG Certificate or PG Diploma. In the event that there are conflicts of opinion between the recommendations made by the External Examiner and those made by the Internal Examiners, the School Examination Board has the mandate to resolve the conflict and to make the final decision.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>8. The computer catalogue of the Library provides details of the books and periodicals available and can be used to reserve and renew books. It can be accessed using dedicated terminals distributed throughout the Library and through the Library&#8217;s World Wide Web site. Graduate students may borrow 12 books plus additional books from a Short Loan collection that contains duplicate copies of books in heavy demand. Any material that is not available in the Library may be ordered through the Document Supply Unit. Information desks are distributed throughout the Library together with self-service photocopiers. Nearly 200 electronic services, including the main scientific, engineering, biological and medical databases, are available through a Library web-based service.
