Introduction to CPD at SLT UoM<\/span><\/span><\/h1>\n

Welcome to CPD at SLT UoM. We hope that you will enjoy the varied learning experiences that your CPD course has to offer over the next few months. The content of this guide relates to the SLT CPD units of study.<\/span><\/p>\n

The student handbook has been developed as a resource for Undergraduate and Postgraduate Taught students completing degree programmes within the School of Health Sciences (SHS).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This resource should be used as the first point of reference for questions concerning your programme, support and advice, or academic policies and procedures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The University of Manchester is a large and complex organisation, and we want to ensure that you know how to access the information, support, and guidance you need to succeed in your studies. It is therefore designed to guide you through many aspects of your time as a student and provides useful links to information available through the University\u2019s website, as well as summarising the facilities and support services that are available across the University and how you can access them. It also outlines what you should expect of the School and what they can expect from you, and clarifies the policies and procedures relevant to your area of study.<\/span><\/p>\n

Currency <\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

If you have opted to study a 15-credit unit, course unit credits are current for three calendar years, effective from the start date of the course unit. Non-credit bearing or zero-credit units are awarded a certificate on successful completion of the formative tasks and engagement in online discussions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Student Engagement<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

There is an expectation that students will engage in all learning activities, and it is the University’s responsibility to monitor the well-being and progress of students. However, we recognise that students on this programme may not be able to attend all synchronous activities. Therefore, when possible, synchronous sessions will be recorded for you to access another time. Check your unit timetable in the Blackboard space for individual sessions. Some units are 100% distance learning and do not include synchronous sessions. To help us ensure you are engaging and understanding the material each unit of study has formative quizzes to check your understanding of the topic so far. You may also be expected to engage with online discussions hosted on Blackboard – check your individual unit for guidance. Course tutors can be contacted with any questions or queries regarding the course unit content.<\/span><\/p>\n

Teaching\/Learning Hours and Methods for the Course Unit<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Each individual course unit has a breakdown of how the 150 study hours are expected to be spent. There is a considerable amount of time allocated to independent study. It is important that you organise yourself and your work for the course unit to utilise these hours to undertake the additional reading and preparation of course work as directed by the course unit leader\/s.<\/span><\/p>\n

You are expected to engage in online tasks and discussions as directed in your individual unit. The SLT CPD units are designed to be delivered via eLearning, although some units may have scheduled online meetings with your tutor. Ensure you check your unit timetable. Course tutors can be contacted via email for any individual queries regarding the course unit content and learning outcomes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Student Support during SLT CPD<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Course unit leaders are available for academic support and advice during the Unit of study and the best way to arrange an appointment is by contacting them via e-mail.<\/span><\/p>\n

Please remember that academic staff are also engaged in many other activities and therefore may not be available to see you immediately. It is preferable to contact them in advance to arrange a mutually agreeable appointment.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Assessment details<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Formative Assessment <\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n

Students are expected to complete the formative multiple choice questionnaires (MCQs) and engage in discussion boards as part of their formative assessment. If you are taking a 0-credit version of a unit, you will need to complete the formative assessments in order to receive your certificate of completion at the end of the course.<\/span><\/p>\n

Summative Assessment <\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n

If you are taking a 15-credit unit, details of the summative assessment can be found in the course unit\u2019s Blackboard teaching space. Ensure you understand the aims and objectives of the assessment and make a note of the submission due date.<\/span><\/p>\n

STUDENTS SHOULD NOTE THAT A REFERENCE LIST SHOULD BE SUBMITTED AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THEIR ASSIGNMENT.<\/span><\/p>\n

For any student who has cited throughout their summative assessment submission but failed to provide a reference list, the assessment will be marked, following which and a 10% reduction will be applied by the marker. A comment will be provided by the marker, in the feedback, noting the lack of a reference list.<\/span><\/p>\n

This change does not replace or impact on the policy pertaining to academic malpractice.<\/span><\/p>\n

The pass mark overall for each Master\u2019s level CPD unit is 50%.<\/span><\/p>\n

Submission of summative work<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n

All assignments will be submitted online via the course unit area on Blackboard. You are strongly advised to retain a copy of written assignments and to obtain a receipt on submission.<\/span><\/p>\n

When submitting any form of written assignment work for summative assessment, the word count includes the following:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • All titles or headings that form part of the actual text. This does not include the fly page or reference list.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • All words that form the actual essay.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • All words forming the titles for figures, tables and boxes are included but this does not include boxes or tables or figures themselves.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • All in-text (that is bracketed) references are included.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • All quoted material.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Professional Guidelines <\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n

    The Speech & Language Therapy Department at UoM operates within the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) codes of conduct, requiring students to maintain confidentiality, including within the academic assessment. When undertaking any formative or summative assessment protection of confidentially concerning the patient, care environment, staff or organisation is to be always maintained. If you are unsure whether your work may contravene the HCPC code, you should discuss this with your course unit lead at the earliest opportunity. Serious breaches of confidentiality may result in referral to the Schools Health and Conduct Committee.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Student Feedback & Marking <\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n

    The programme adheres to the University of Manchester student feedback policy. You can read more about the policy here. at: http:\/\/www.regulations.manchester.ac.uk\/academic\/submission-of-work\/<\/span><\/p>\n

    All summative work will be marked by the course tutor (first marker) and moderated internally by another member of the SLT teaching team. Marks will then be ratified by an internal examination board before they are confirmed and final. Students may be permitted to view their provisional marks and feedback prior to the exam board on the understanding that no mark is finalised until this process has been completed.<\/span><\/p>\n

    For students who receive a mark of under 50% for a summative piece of work, a resit assignment can be arranged with the course tutor with an agreed resubmission date. Only one resit summative assessment is permitted per CPD unit.
