Plenary Sessions

Details of which sessions you should attend are provided on the BIOL20000 Blackboard site. You should bring a device capable of accessing the internet and your student ID number to these sessions to register your attendance.The plenary session counts towards your tutorial attendance record. If you are ill on the day of the plenary session, you must contact the student support office prior to the plenary session start in order to obtain an excused absence. Contacting your Academic Tutor instead of the student support office will result in your absence being unexcused. If the session allocated to your degree programme clashes with a language unit or BIOL unit, you may attend the other session.

Week 2: Introduction to Assessment literacy and Communicating Science

Intended Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this plenary session students should be able to:

  • describe the relationship between assessment and learning
  • apply a conceptual (and theoretical) understanding of assessment
  • describe the nature and meaning of assessment criteria and understanding
  • demonstrate skills in self and peer assessment
  • select and apply appropriate approaches to assessment tasks

Week 3: Communicating Science and Introduction to Dissertation

Intended Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this plenary session students should be able to:

  • describe the purpose of a Dissertation
  • describe how choosing from a selection of dissertation titles can extend knowledge of their degree subject
  • identify the timeline of key events, including selection of dissertation titles, method of title allocation, announcement of title allocations and the deadline for dissertation submission describe the supervision process and what to expect from their supervisor
  • identify what is expected of them in terms of communication with the supervisor and meeting important deadlines
  • describe when and in what format to expect feedback
  • identify how and where to start searching for relevant sources of information
  • identify the importance of reviewing previous feedback on their writing and BIOL10742 (Writing and Referencing Skills) online unit.

Week 7: Employability

Intended Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this plenary session students should be able to:

  • identify and evidence the skills employers look for in science students and graduates
  • apply 2 techniques for communicating their transferable skills and experiences dynamically to potential recruiters
  • grasp the importance of context setting when using their experiences to evidence skills for different roles
  • identify how the careers service can provide support after the plenary session
