Intended Learning Outcomes

Alan Gilbert Learning CommonsYour tutorial studies will extend your knowledge of your degree subject and help to put the information you receive in lectures and practicals into perspective. They will also provide an opportunity to discuss your work in lectures and practicals with your Academic Tutor. The work you do for tutorials will help you to develop new and improve existing skills. Employers value these ‘transferable skills’ and they will also help you with time management during your degree course and improve your technique in examinations (see Appendix 1).

Year 2 Semester 3 Tutorial Overview – Developing Scientific Literacy Skills

The tutorial activities should:

  • provide a mixture of tutor-led and student-led activities supported by a series of plenary sessions to support second year students in developing their scientific literacy skills. provide a framework  which can be used with programme-specific material
  • build on the first-year writing and reference skills unit and the resources supported and  delivered by the My Learning Essentials team in the library
  • build on students understanding of the purpose and expectations of assessments. Highlighting the difference between first and later years
  • build on students ability to search for information and identify relevant data to meet their information needs
  • link to the semester 3 assessed tutorial activities of an abstract, presentation and programme- specific assignment.

Year 2 Semester 3 Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of Semester 3 tutorial activities students should be able to:

  • search for information and identify relevant data to meet information needs
  • extend their knowledge of their degree subject and help to put the information received in lectures and practicals into perspective.
  • discuss work covered in lectures and practicals with their Academic Tutor
  • describe the relationship between assessment and learning
  • apply a conceptual (and theoretical) understanding of assessment
  • describe the nature and meaning of assessment criteria and understanding
  • demonstrate skills in self and peer assessment
  • select and apply appropriate approaches to assessment tasks
  • develop new and improve existing transferable skills
  • identify how to evidence and apply transferable skills for job applications and interviews in  the future.

Year 2 Semester 4 Tutorial Overview – Enhancing Programme-Specific Skills

The tutorial activities should:

  • provide a mixture of tutor-led and student-led activities supported by a series of plenary sessions to support second year students in enhancing programme specific skills
  • provide a framework to consider ethical issues  which can be used with programme-specific material
  • link to the semester 4 assessed tutorial activities of a programme-specific assignment and a dissertation presentation.

Year 2 Semester 4 Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of Semester 4 tutorial activities students should be able to:

  • develop and apply programme-specific knowledge
  • develop and apply programme-specific skills
  • search for information and identify relevant data to meet their information needs
  • identify relevant information to communicate science to specific audiences
  • discuss a range of contemporary ethical issues in science and biomedicine
  • develop skills in analysing bioethical arguments
  • develop skills in presenting clear arguments and justifying and defending the position they  take on these issues.
  • developed organisation and presentation skills to prepare and defend a debate topic argument.
  • demonstrate skills in self and peer assessment
  • select and apply appropriate approaches to assessment tasks
